We have been producing wood pellets and wood briquettes under the Thermospan brand since January 2004. Our plant in Stein (Bavaria) produces around 140,000 t of wood pellets and around 25,000 t of wood briquettes a year.
Wood is a renewable fuel and can be used for heating. Wood pellets are made from untreated wood and serve as an alternative to fossil fuels.
Around 50 employees work for the Thermospan brand at our site in Stein. Sales are handled by regional and national sales partners. Two thirds of production goes to customers in Germany, the remaining third to neighbouring EU countries.
Our raw material supply is secured by large neighbouring sawmills. The wood shavings produced there are collected by our own trucks and fed directly into production. Short supply routes reduce transport distances; the PEFC certificate confirms the use of raw materials from sustainable forestry.
The wood shavings are dried using waste heat from our biomass combined heat and power plants. Technical drying brings the residual moisture below 10 %. This significantly increases the calorific value and reduces dust emissions during combustion.
The energy generated by the power plants is used to process the pellets further: the material is compacted under high pressure and then pressed through the holes of a die.
The freshly pressed pellets cool down on conveyor augers, and some are filled into bags. Industrial robots stack the bags on Euro pallets; the subsequent film wrapping provides good protection against splash water and during transport.
So that we can deliver pellets at any time, our pellet silos are kept full all year round.
